The town of Szekszárd

Szekszárd is the smallest county town of Hungary that is surrounded by ornamental vine-producing hills. You are able to find a place here to get away from all your problems, to seek recreation, as well as find opportunities for active holidays (playing golf, horse riding or cycling).
Its world-famous red wine, which in 1855 heated the hearts of British soldiers when going to occupy Sebastopol in the Crimean war, here, from its place of origin, can be tasted in the local wine cellars, and with real Hungarian hospitality. The drinking of this region’s wine was one of the favourite pastimes of the famous Hungarian composer Ferenc Liszt, as was the case with the ambassador of the United States of America between the World Wars – who, incidentally, was symbolically beaten in the nearby Gemenc forest by local hunters at an initiation ceremony. He was happy to experience this custom, as he had brought down one of the huge stags of today’s peaceful Central-European forest, which gives a home to and supports 200 different species of bird. Nowadays, one has the chance to take a boat trip on the Danube, and to go fishing or hunting - yet it is the gastronomical pleasures that give surprises to the visitors.

The colourful national traits of the neighbouring Sárköz helped it win the international exhibition’s gold medal in 1906 – and, as a memory, the county’s guests can buy and take them away with them. Comfort and culture come together in Szekszárd, and in one of its several museums one can find the folk arts and paintings of Eszter Mattioni, who has won the New York city grand prize. Szekszárd has kept everything that a town needs so that it can favour visitors, so offers a lot to make your stay convenient and unforgettable.
