Budapest – the capital of Hungary

Budapest – the capital of Hungary, one of the cities of the now bygone 2000 year-old Roman Empire, interweaved by a tumultuous history with its attendant memories, noisy with the voices of different battles and becoming a cultural centre at several times over several periods in its past, it is now said to be the Paris of Central Europe. In the XIX century, with the union of three different cities merging to establish the current capital, it has become the home of 2 million people and the cultural, economic and tourist centre of the country. Meanwhile, eight bridges connect the two parts of the river, as it is divided into two parts by the Danube - on one side hilly, green areas attract the eyes, whilst flat lands with full memories dominate the other.

On the Buda side, the Gellért Hill gives an amazing view over both sides of the Danube along the city centre that was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1988. You can take photographs of the landscape of colourful Eclectic, Renaissance and Classical buildings stretching alongside each of the embankments. You can have a look at the famous Art Nouveau Gellért Spa as well, which is just one of the 12 largest thermal bath centres of the capital. The karst springs of the dolomite rocks break surface at 80 different spots and feed the waters of the curative baths’ buildings.

The Royal Palace of the Castle Hill crowns the illuminated city panorama by night. Today the building houses more museums, but the old-time pageantry still can be perceived and it dominates the hillside landscape even nowadays. The Matthias Church with the Fisherman’s Bastion form the most attractive viewpoint of the capital. The Bastion, ornamented with seven towers, is a breathtaking sight in itself. The church is situated behind, with colour ceramic tiles worth seeing, with its special atmosphere can amaze even non-believers. At every step the streets of the castle district gives the feeling of being in medieval times and the cafés and small restaurants offer the possibility for quiet contemplation.

If we look down from Buda to the Pest side, the neo-gothic Parliament building catches our attention. Sky-high lacy towers surround the symmetrical building’s dome, and there are hundreds of decorations on the walls. If you have time, do not miss walking around the huge political centre, or have a look at it from a river-boat cruise.

The statues of Heroes’ Square with the monumental impression they give, are a living story-book of Hungarian history. Kings are standing between last century’s columns and an archangel from above guards the bystanders below. On both sides of the square art museums stand. In the background, on the shore of an artificial lake, the Vajdahunyad Castle shows 10 centuries of the different architectural styles of Hungary, whilst the City Park offers relaxation opportunities according to everyone’s taste.

For those who wish to have a quite walk in the heart of the capital, Margaret’s Island lies in the middle of the Danube – a peaceful, pedestrianised, natural rest area, preferred mainly by the locals and bordered only by the river.
